Chris Troch, 6th Dan – IKD Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario
Sensei Chris Troch is from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He started his training when he was 22 years old. He was drawn to karate because of the TV show Kung Fu with David Carradine.
" I was young, and I was fascinated by the was he (David Carradine) moved his body and all the cool moves he did."
He started his training under the direction of Sensei Carlos Saliente from Chile.
"I started with 8 of my friend in a class of 35. I’m the only one that stood the test of time."
Chris would later start training under Sensei Frank Woon-A-Tai.
"I’ve trained with Master Okazaki, Master Yaguchi, Master Osaka, Sensei James Fields Sensei David Jones and all the members of the IKD Shihan Kai."
Sensei Troch has tested with Master Okazaki for his Shodan through Yondan exams, in 1988, 1990, 1993 and 2003 respectively. In 2008, he obtained his Godan from Master Okazaki, Master Yaguchi, Master Woon-A-Tai and a panel of 9 others. In 2014, he was promoted to Rokudan by Master Woon-A-Tai.
"I was fortunate to have tested for my 2nd Kyu with Master Nakayama back in 1986."
He has been competing in tournament since 1987 in which he came in 1st in Kata and Kumite.
"After that first event, I was hooked on tournaments!"
Sensei Chris has 2 special needs children and he has always wanted them to learn karate. There wasn’t much of an interest with his daughter, who is in a wheelchair, just enough to get him motivated to help others. He started a wheelchair class. Then a special needs class from a local high school approached him to teach there class, which consisted of kids with Down Syndrome, Autism, confined to a wheelchair, Aspergers, just to name a few of there needs.
"It was so much fun I decided to start up a class for them. I tell you it is very rewarding to see the progress and hear the positive feed back from the parents."
Sensei Troch is the owner and operator of a dojo Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada.
"When Sensei Woon-A-Tai purchased a building in Sault Ste. Marie for the purpose of a dojo, I was the guy that could dedicate the most time. For a reward he brought me to Guyana. While I was there I taught and trained. Of course, I had to see the sights, so he found a pretty young lady to show me around. She had just broken up with her boyfriend, who still loved her. He couldn’t understand that boys and girls can be friends, so he was very jealous. Sensei, an instructor from the area, the girl and I were driving around. We came upon the ex-boyfriend at a bridge somewhere. He was not so happy. We drove away. That night we went to the dojo and trained. When we returned to Senseis brothers place he grab my arm and pressed it to his hip. Under his gi he had his gun, I believe it was a 38 caliber 6 shooter at the time. I said heck? Not in so many word! He told me he brought it to protect me from CUTLASS. If you don’t know what cutlass is, ask him next time you see him.
