Michelle Woon-A-Tai, 5th Dan — Toronto, Ontario
IKD Honbu Upper Beaches & IKD Honbu Downsview
Born into a karate family, Michelle began training at the young age of six.
She received her Shodan from Master Teruyuki Okazaki in 1997 and worked her way up to Godan, which she received from Master Frank Woon-A-Tai in 2016. From her early days in the JKA/ISKF to her present membership with the IKD, Michelle’s primary instructor has been Shuseki Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai, her father. She has also trained with several other masters, including Masters: Okazaki, Nishiyama, Yaguchi, Tanaka, and the Masters of the IKD Shihan-kai.
Michelle is currently the IKD Canadian Women's Ontario Provincial and National Kata Champion, a multiple gold medalist, and most recently, the recipient of the Best Female Competitor Award at the 2016 IKD Canada Cup in Montreal, Quebec. She continues to participate at IKD tournaments locally and Internationally.
First enrolled into karate by her parents, Michelle quickly realized as she grew up that karate was a way of life for her and her family. She introduced karate to her friends, peers, and colleagues, and quickly developed a reputation for her skill within the local community.
When she is not tending to IKD Honbu administrative matters, she can be found teaching at the IKD Honbu Downsview Dojo alongside Shihan Keith DaCosta. Michelle is also the Support Committee Chair for the 2736 Royal Regiment of Canada Army Cadet Corps.
In her free time, Michelle can often be seen enjoying a walk around the Toronto Beaches. She enjoys traveling, working out, reading about history, volunteering, and practicing her marksmanship at various ranges throughout the GTA.
