Jennifer Foster, 6th Dan – Bruce Mines, Ontario

Jennifer Foster (6th Dan) is the only girl and the youngest of 4 children. She watched old martial arts movies with her brothers and when karate came to Bruce Mines, in 1987 under Sensei Carlos Salinas, she thought it would be “really cool” to be able to do the things she had seen in the movies. She had tried every other sport available, in her small community of 600, but this was what she fell in love with. She was 14 years old and would work at the family owned grocery store in order to pay for her weekly training.

Shuseki Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai took over in 1989; she trained under Shihan Josef Woon-A-Tai for a year in Sault Ste. Marie (JKA at that time) receiving her Shodan from Master Okazaki in 1990. Jennifer has seen the benefit of training under Masters: Okazaki, Yaguchi, Tanaka and her mentor and primary Sensei, Shuseki Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai. She has now been training for 30 years, receiving her Rokudan in December of 2014 under IKD.

Jennifer is a Registered Practical Nurse and works in the emergency department of the local hospital. Her time off is spent with her children; she enjoys 4 wheeling and painting. Jennifer is known for her party planning and bringing energy and spirit to all the events she attends. She puts effort into sharing the karate practice with new comers and children. This is evident by her requiring two vehicles to bring her “troop” to IKD World Camp this year.

Jennifer has competed as part of Team Canada in Jamaica, France, Canada, USA and Mexico. She is a past champion at the Provincial, National and World levels. She began instructing in 1990 and started her own dojo in 1993, passing on her knowledge to adults and youth since that time. Karate is a family affair for Jennifer, as both of her daughters, Sierra and Kiya, has achieved rank of Nidan.

Jennifer considers herself doubly blessed. “ I have my biological family and I have my ‘Karate Family’. I have family all over the world, people I know and trust, I am very lucky!”
